What is agate?

Agate is a translucent variety of microcrystalline quartz, used as a semiprecious stone because of its distinctive characteristics & color. Agates have been used as gemstones for thousands of years, for both personal use & the home.

How is Agate formed?

Agate forms by the deposition of silica from groundwater into the cavities of igneous rocks. The agate deposits in layers around the walls of the cavity, or inlayers, building up from the bottom of the cavity. This formation creates the banded patterns that are visible in most agates.
